If you are looking for a nice hutch, there is an abundance of dark pine colonial pieces available. The structure is very solid and the prices of them are generally very cheap.
I know, I know, it's not your style but it can easily be redesigned.
This little beauty was donated to ROOM IN OUR HEARTS by owners who decided it was time to update their style. The great thing about this piece was it was made well. Everything was still in working order and the glass in the doors had a nice look to it.
A little paint was all this hutch needed to make it special. I took all the hardware and doors off and gave it a light sanding.
Two coats of primer ensured that the paint job would hold up.
Next came the flat paint in a gorgeous taupe color. A girly girl is not the way I would describe myself but I always wanted to paint something pink. The combination of taupe and pink just looks so great together so I went all out. I applied the pink to the inside of the hutch. After lightly sanding the areas where the pink was applied, I got a beautiful and planned distressed look.
The key to really updating the piece was changing out of the old colonial hardware with more current pieces. Adding a little eclectic appeal to it, I decided not to use all the same hardware. By using the same color and finish on the pulls and knobs, it gave the piece it own originality without it looking haphazard.
The family that received the refinished piece loved it. It had a uniqueness that gave it a custom look in the room. After staging all their dishes and collectibles, the little pine cupboard has just perfect. So remember, don't discard all those dark pine colonial pieces, reinvent them!
