A wave of shock instantly came over them as their eyes scanned the walls, the furniture, and the decor. Smiles appeared on both of their faces. It was a completely different room than what they had seen just mere hours before. The Oliveras’ Shore Road home in the borough received less than a foot of water from superstorm Sandy in October, Jess Olivera, 48, explained. Shortly after, his father Jesse Olivera’s health took a turn for the worse, as he caught pneumonia and later had a heart attack. He passed away in January. Jess Olivera grew up in the home; it belonged to his parents. In 1995, Jess and Sue moved back to the property with their two children. His mother passed away in 2002. Shore Road had never been flooded before, the couple explained. They had been spending the last six months repairing and rebuilding the interior of the home, which is a mother-daughter style. Or as Jess Olivera put it, a father-son style. In came Room In Our Hearts (RIOH), a nonprofit that helps families whose homes have been affected by crisis. The organization, formed since Sandy, redecorates one room in homes without any costs to owners. So far, RIOH has redecorated six rooms in Union Beach; next week, they are heading to Highlands. RIOH Executive Director Katharine Koehler found the Oliveras through Mark Zielinski of the Gateway Church of Christ in Holmdel. Zielinski provided a list of residents in need to Koehler for the initiative. Since Sandy and Jesse Olivera’s passing, the couple decided to convert both sides of the house into a single-family home. And a room that was once their dining room would be remodeled by RIOH as their master bedroom. After months of living in their storm damaged home, it was time for the Olivera family to get some good news. RIOH called Saturday a “room reveal.” Early that morning, Jesse and Sue Olivera were sent to the other side of the house while RIOH members began redecorating. (Page 2 of 2) The organization partners with government and relief agencies, businesses and other volunteer organizations. Some items, Koehler explained, come from her “hunting” skills at garage sales, flea markets, etc. She and her team then fix up or repurpose items to fit the homeowner’s theme or style. “We all like garage sale stuff, we all like junk ... we like to repurpose it,” Koehler said. “It’s just a matter of coordinating and having a vision to do it.” The couple chose an outdoor and nature theme for their master bedroom, with sage green walls, oak furniture, and a mix of eclectic items to coordinate. Koehler was able to repurpose Jess Olivera’s father’s nightstand to match with the new bedroom. “We like to have a month to do a room, because we really like them to walk in and think, ‘This is special, this isn’t something where somebody just plopped furniture,’ ” Koehler said. “I thought maybe they were going to place some furniture. I don’t know. I just didn’t think it was going to be so nice,” said Sue Olivera, 48. Her favorite part of the room was the vanity. Jess Olivera agreed, adding he was caught off guard by the grand remodel. The organization accepts both monetary and physical donations.
